Team building: Employees Come First!

Whether you’re just starting out, or already scaling up your business, building high performing teams should be one of your most important objectives. If cash is the lifeblood of the business, your people build the veins structure to conduit it. 

Likewise, an investor invests not only in your product, process, or idea, but also your team. Your office culture, how your teammates interact together, or even how they react to stress – say, during an investor’s pitch, can signal a lot!

As a startup owner, building a family-like office culture goes a long way. Given the unpredictable and fast paced startup growth and environment, safe and open working culture let’s your people learn faster, ask questions, and take on more responsibilities to apply themselves. 

With that comes loyalty. Don’t hesitate to put your energy into them – teach them, show them what you do, not only responding to their questions, but also anticipating them. Your return on investment will come in form of their loyalty, motivation, and confidence

So how do you build effective teams?

Belbin typology has taught us how people behave in teams, and which of the roles they are most suited to, such as:

  • The Co-ordinator. That’s likely to be you, delegating tasks and defining team goals.
  • The Team worker. Everyone’s favourite, who helps to keep the team strong together.
  • The Resource Investigator who spots new opportunities and bring in new ideas to the table.
  • The Plant. Inquisitive, good at creative problem-solving. 

 So what happens if you employ a Plant to an admin role, filling their day with spreadsheets, when instead their inquisitive nature would allow them to thrive in your strategic department?
